Fear of Failure: Our Constant Companion

Picture this: you've got an important task looming on the horizon, and instead of tackling it, you find yourself scrolling through social media or reorganizing your sock or everything-but-the-kitchen-sink drawer, or try to squeeze in another load of laundry. Sound familiar? This always gets to me as working from home, requires willpower!

We've all been there – that paralyzing feeling when we're faced with a daunting task, fearing that we might not measure up to our own expectations, let alone those of others. This fear can gnaw at our self-worth and leave us worried about how others will perceive us.

Psychologists even have a fancy term for this behavior – "self-handicapping." It's when we create excuses or obstacles (like procrastination) to protect our self-esteem. By putting off a task until the last minute, we've got a built-in excuse if things don't go perfectly. But here's the key to breaking free from this fear: practice self-compassion, set realistic goals, and break down your tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Shift your focus from perfection to progress, and you'll be well on your way to defeating this procrastination demon.

If you're the kind of person who sets impossibly high standards for yourself and breaks into a cold sweat at the mere thought of making a mistake, you're in good company. Perfectionism is another sneaky culprit behind procrastination.

Perfectionism: The Sneaky Culprit that is an illusion

The pursuit of perfection often leads us to delay tasks as we strive to avoid errors at all costs. But here's the catch – research shows that perfectionism can have both positive and negative effects. Shannon Swales, a clinical psychologist, provides an insightful perspective on perfectionism. She explains it is a combination of beliefs and behaviours that make individuals lack confidence in their own talents. It includes elements like unrelenting standards, high expectations, and self-worth based solely on achievements. This often leads to burnout, as individuals with perfectionism find themselves unable to meet these unachievable standards in life.

In a nutshell, Embrace your imperfection, be kind to yourself, there is not such aspect as perfection, life causes us to always expand and want more. This is the natural way of the universe. Set smaller attainable goals, and watch your procrastination tendencies crumble.

Overcoming Procrastination Strategies to do now

Conquering procrastination requires a proactive approach. Here are some evidence-based strategies to help you regain control of your productivity.

Set Clear Goals:  Questions to ask yourself.

  • What is your goal?

  • What is the experience that you would like to have when you've accomplished your goal?

  • Close your eyes, take a deep breath and take a moment to feel, what that would be like.

  1. Create a To-Do List: Prioritise tasks by crafting a to-do list to enhance organisation and focus.

  2. Break Tasks into Smaller Steps: Divide larger tasks into more manageable components to diminish their perceived enormity.

  3. Implement Time Management Techniques: Techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, which involves focused work intervals with brief breaks, can enhance productivity and diminish procrastination.

  4. Find Intrinsic Motivation: Seek personal meaning or rewards within tasks by connecting them to your values and long-term aspirations.
